The standard this site is built to
This website is built to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the World Wide Web Consortium. That standard is what most accessibility law in the United States points at.
Accessibility was part of how this site was built from the first day. It was not checked at the end and it is not a setting that was switched on.
What that means on this site
- Every colour pairing on the site has been measured against the contrast the standard requires, on each background it actually appears on, at desktop, phone and 320px widths.
- Every image carries a text description for people using a screen reader. Purely decorative images are marked as decorative so they are skipped instead of read aloud.
- Pages are built to be reached and used with a keyboard, and whatever you are on is visibly outlined.
- A skip link is the first thing you reach on every page, so you do not have to tab through the menu and the contact bar every time.
- Headings are in real order, with one main heading per page, so a screen reader can move through a page by its structure.
- Text reflows on a small screen and stays readable when you zoom in.
- If you have asked your device to reduce motion, this site respects that.
How it is checked
The site is tested with automated accessibility tooling against WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA at three screen widths, including a 320px phone, and the colour contrast is measured from the pixels actually rendered rather than from the values in the stylesheet. It is checked again whenever the site changes.
Automated testing cannot catch everything. It can tell you a description exists; it cannot tell you the description is accurate. That is why the next section matters, and we mean it.
